Research Project for
Soil Quality and Nutrient Management
Development of sustainable slow-release organic fertilizers
This project is the first step in the development of organic NOD-fertilizers (Nutrition On Demand), with a nutrient release pattern close to the actual needs of the plant.
The project focusses on the control of mineral N release from organic fertilizers, with respect to the environment. Present available techniques for slow release fertilizers (coatings, polymers) are not very sustainable. They use non-renewable resources, have a high energy cost in production and make use of organic or toxic solvents.
As an alternative, DCM is developping a sustainable, environmental friendly slow release organic fertilizer, that can be used in biologic farming and horticulture. These research activities are financially supported by the Flemish government (IWT 050844, 2006-2008).
